Empowering the Girl Child: Celebrating International Day of the Girl Child 2023
On Wednesday, October 11th, 2023, JDPC Ijebu-Ode marked the International Day of the Girl Child with a vibrant and insightful event. The occasion was graced by esteemed guests and participants who share the common goal of empowering and uplifting our girl children.
Represented by Mrs, Ireti Disu, the Deputy Director, Rev. Fr. John Patrick Ngoyi, the Director, JDPC, Ijebu-Ode, highlighted the need for productive use and application of digital gadgets and technologies amongst secondary school students, while noting that a girl child can be the best she desires to be.
Dr. Adefunke Ekinne, a Senior Lecturer in the Educational Foundation Department, Tai Solarin University of Education delivered an enlightening speech on the event’s theme, “Digital Generation, Our Generation.” emphasizing the pivotal role of today’s digital landscape in shaping the lives and futures of our girls. Her words resonated with all present, shedding light on the unique challenges and opportunities faced by today’s girls in a digital world while she stressed the importance of ensuring that the digital world is harnessed to empower and protect the girl child.
Mrs. Idowu, the Principal of Muslim Girls High School, Ijebu-Ode (represented by Mrs. Oshimade), served as the event’s Chairperson, and her presence added a touch of distinction to the occasion.
The event saw the active participation of a majority of enthusiastic and empowered young females, along with some equally supportive male students from various secondary schools within the Ogun East Senatorial District of Ogun State. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to ensuring that girls have access to quality education, opportunities, and a platform for their voices to be heard. In attendance were also the dedicated Coordinators of the “Peace Clubs”, who have played a pivotal role in fostering peace, advocacy, and empowerment among students.
Peace club is a student-led extracurricular group that focus on promoting peace, conflict resolution, and social justice within their school communities and beyond.
One of the most inspiring moments at the International Day of the Girl Child 2023 event in JDPC, Ijebu-Ode, was the decoration of our Girl Child Champions. These remarkable young individuals, who were once members of Peace Clubs during their secondary school years, have now graduated and are actively championing the cause of the girl child in their respective areas of endeavour.
Their journey from inspired students to passionate advocates and leaders exemplifies the transformative power of education and empowerment. These champions are beacons of hope, demonstrating that every girl has the potential to thrive and create positive change in their communities.
JDPC, Ijebu-Ode proudly salutes these Girl Child Champions and extends gratitude to everyone who graced the event. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering and celebrating the girls of today, knowing that they are the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.
